What is a lift modernisation?

A lift modernisation is a significant upgrade to the equipment of a lift in an attempt to significantly improve its safety, aesthetics, reliability or working life. When a lift is consistently experiencing issues, or inconveniencing users, the decision becomes to modernise or to replace the lift.

A modernisation is more than just repairs, it involves the replacement of significant components. Modernisations often involve the replacement of doors, or their driving mechanisms, motors, drives, gearboxes, control systems, control panels, hydraulic tanks and lift cabins. It is important to meet with a range of lift companies for them to assess the lift and then propose what is needed to achieve the desired outcome and, of course, to price the works.

Meeting lift company technicians is also important so the customer can determine if the lift company is honest and competent. It takes effort for a lift company to evaluate all of the works required and to tailor the solutions to the customer's needs; not just those of the lift company.

Modernisations can generally be planned over several years, to enable customers to budget and manage cash flow. The most important items can be attended to first and then work through other items that are less urgent. This is very different from a lift replacement; replacements are generally much more expensive, both financially and in terms of time and inconvenience.

When replacing a lift the costs arrive all at once, building works are required, and the building may be without a lift for many months. It is essential to ask quoting lift companies for how the modernisation can be staged over time.

All the best with your decision making process!
